After 2 and half years in Denmark I am making what in my eyes I deem to be a very large move: Hyderabad, India. I will be working for a Danish company but will initially be the only non-Indian in a small office of around 5-10 people. I am moving by myself and with what can be fit into one suitcase and one piece of hand luggage.
I am currently winding down my activities at my current employer (as for this coming Friday, it will be my previous). On Monday the first I will be starting at the new employer’s headquarters in Denmark for 2 days of orientation and then to India via Scotland. In Scotland I will receive further product briefing. By the 6th of February I will be in the Hyderabadi winter, consisting of daytime highs of 30 degress.
I will be living and working in the area known as Banjara Hills. This is supposedly the more affluent part of Hyderabad (a city of over 6 million), but it is said that one is never too far away from poverty in India.
Current pre-travel questions:
• How bad will the diarrhoea be?
• What is cheap and what is expensive in India?
• What will I miss about Denmark (not much at the moment after the coldest winter in 25 years)
• What material is most practical for a summer suit?
o Follow-up question: should one trust GQ or an Indian tailor more?
• How does an India work day progress?
• How was will broadband be?
• Are people going to look at my leather shoes and be like “I can tell those are cow”
o Follow-up question: In a Muslim city in a Hindu country what kind of hide does one use? Horse? Isn’t that expensive?
So yeah, that’s the intro. I hope to return with further thoughts once the journey has begun.
